Senate Committee Advances FY26 LHHS Bill

Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed its Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies (LHHS) bill with bipartisan support. The bill provides small increases for Title I, IDEA and REAP and level funds the most other K12 programs (see details below). This is only the first step in a very long appropriations process, but a positive starting point given the current push by the Administration and House Republicans to drastically reduce federal education spending. 51萝莉 is pleased to see bipartisan action that protects investments in education.

The majority of K12 programs receive level funding from FY25 鈥� this is a highlight of the programs that impact most districts.
Proposed Cuts:
- School safety national activities: -$26 million
- Full-service community schools: -$15 million
- Education, Innovation and Research: -$24 million
- Ready to learn TV: -$2 million
- Arts in Education: -$5.5 million
On the other side of Capitol Hill, the House Appropriations Committee had planned to take up its LHHS bill in late July but postponed until after August recess. The only insight into the House proposal is their 鈥渋nterim鈥� allocation for the entire bill 鈥� which represents about $14 billion cut when compared to FY25. We won鈥檛 know the extent of these cuts will impact education until the full bill is released, but this signals significant differences between the House and Senate versions. There remains widespread concern about a government shutdown in late September should Congress be unable to pass a Continuing Resolution and provide both chambers more time to negotiate spending for FY26.
