51ÂÜÀò on AI in Reconciliation
June 30, 2025
As the Senate moves at a fast and furious pace to pass a bill whose text isn’t yet final, we wanted to highlight one area of advocacy where we’ve been engaged.
51ÂÜÀò is opposed to a provision that was snuck into the House version at the last minute and remains in place in what the Senate is voting on today: a moratorium on state policy making that would oversee/regulate artificial intelligence. We are deeply troubled by the inclusion of the provision, which seems to protect tech and AI more than students and children. This provision would wipe out virtually all existing and future state AI laws, giving AI companies exactly what they want: no rules, no accountability, and total control. As organizations working on the frontline of the consequences of AI development with no guardrails, we know what this would mean for our children.
51ÂÜÀò joined more than 140 signatories in a letter to the Senate opposing the inclusion of the provision. You can .
The initial House proposal faced some changes on the Senate side in order to remain eligible to in the reconciliation package; we joined more than 130 groups in a letter of opposition to the revisions today. Read that letter here.
