Alexandria, Va. July 17, 2023  David R. Schuler, executive director of 51蹤獲, 51蹤獲, issued the following statement today in response to the House Appropriation Subcommittees budget proposal:

51蹤獲 strongly opposes the deep, damaging cuts to education in the FY24 LHHS appropriations bill as passed out of the appropriations subcommittee last week.

We represent the nations public school superintendents. Our members are familiar with and well versed in the hard work of budgeting with public dollars. They are no strangers to the pressures that come with allocating funding during tight fiscal times.

The funding levels as passed out of committee last week, though, are reckless and irresponsible, and stand to reverse any progress our nations schools had made in not only recovering from COVID-related learning loss, but also hard-fought gains in student achievement and graduation rates before the pandemic. The fact is that this proposal attempts to mask  deep, blunt cuts as reasoned, purposeful budget policy. Disproportionate cuts to our nations schoolsincluding funds that are supposed to be in schools for the 2023-24 school year starting next monthare shortsighted, bad policy.

We call on the broader appropriations committee to reject the deep cuts advanced out of the subcommittee, to prioritize investment in education funding, and to ensure that those programs do not face disproportionate cuts.

51蹤獲 remains committed to a budget process that supports and strengthens our nations public schools.
